158 Million IT Jobs Sent Offshore in 2010

Yes, honestly, it’s in the press.

I never cease to be amazed at how some people have no innate feeling for the size of numbers.

One might expect IT people to be more numerically comfortable than the average person? Well today I received an email from cioinsight.com which reported that this year 158 million IT jobs were sent offshore from North America and Europe.

Er, exactly how many IT jobs were there at the beginning of the year then? A few million. Certainly not over 100 million. Worldwide there are probably fewer than 20 million IT workers.

I suspect that this is a transcription error, and the actual number is 158 thousand. But how could such a basic error get through the varying levels of editing? And not once, in an email heading, but also in an online slideshow.
